Lihyan

The ancient kingdom of Lihyan Lihyaniten was located in today's oasis of Al-' Ula, about 150 km south-west of Tayma in northwestern Saudi Arabia and was on the Incense Route. There are inscriptions from the 6th to the 4th century BC.

The main town was known from the Bible Dedan. The lihyanische language is considered a dialect of the North Arabic. Other dialects were displaced today as the Safaitische, Thamudic of the area around Tayma and Hasaitische of Al- Hasa. For the early version of the Lihyanischen often the term is used Dedanitisch. After the establishment of the Caliphate these dialects were supplanted by the high- Arab, which also represents a North Arabian dialect.
