History of the song
Formation
The text originates from the poet Antun Mihanović, one of the carriers of the Illyrian movement, and was in 1835 under the title " Hrvatska domovina " first published. Historians have long been of the opinion that it was set to music by Josif Runjanin 1846 today but claims the musicologist and historian Andrija Tomašek that this is not true.
Status
Even at the Austro- Hungarian period was the song as a kind of Croatian national anthem and was sung on ceremonial occasions. However, it was only one of several " national anthems ".
In 1891, she was referred for the first time as " the Croatian anthem". In the following years it became the - albeit unofficial - national anthem and was sung immediately after the Emperor's Hymn.
Also in the interwar period was the song as an unofficial national anthem application. During the Second World War, it was sung by both the fascist Ustashe, as well as by the communist partisans. In 1972, she was elevated to the anthem of the Socialist Republic of Croatia, and remained so even after Croatia's declaration of independence in 1991.

Variations
For historical and political reasons, the text especially the third verse was repeatedly varied.
The original text was a Croatian- Slavonian home song. It is of dom ( within the meaning of home ), not from narod (in the sense of nation ) of the question. The sea is not mentioned, Dalmatia is not yet included, as connection to the world acts the Danube:
In today then amended by the insertion of the sea (more) and the Drava is explicitly made to the territorial scope of the Triune Kingdom of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia relation. The love of the Croats now applies his nation ( narod ), the song is explicit as the national anthem:
Finally there is a third version of this stanza, which was used under the Ustasha regime. In this, the Drina is also mentioned in order to underpin the territorial claim to the whole of Bosnia - Herzegovina ( "Croatia to the Drina " ):
