Lilia Skala

Lilia Skala ( born November 28, 1896 in Vienna, Austria, † December 18, 1994 on Long Iceland, New York) was an American film and theater actress of Austrian origin.

Life

Born and raised in Vienna visited scale the Technical University of Dresden, since her first career aspiration was to become an architect. Not for nothing scale had long reputed to be Austria's first architect.

Soon, however, she met Max Reinhardt know who their real talent, acting, realized she had received in his acting ensemble and also promoted. Between 1931 and 1937 she appeared in six feature films, including, inter alia, 1936 in girls' boarding school, directed by Géza von Bolváry.

She married in the early 1930s Erik scale, a Jew; both had two sons together. Erik scale, which was interned shortly after the Anschluss by the Nazis, was the only reason dismissed because Lilia Skala could bribe the guards with cigarettes. Her husband managed to escape across the border, but he was forced to leave first wife and children in Austria. Later, Lilia Skala succeeded with their children to escape from Austria; the family was reunited in England and emigrated in 1939, penniless, in the United States.

This had to scale that Germany was in Austria and partly also an acclaimed stage and film star, start all over again, and took odd jobs right to feed the family. However, through their talent, to learn the English language quickly, she made it in the U.S., first on Broadway and later in film and television, to gain a foothold.

Her most famous film was to be the 1963 drama produced lilies of the field; for her portrayal of Mother Superior Maria, she was nominated in 1964 for both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Another well-known film in Skala's career was Flashdance, produced in 1983.

Lilia Skala turned into old age films and on stage. Her last film was the 1991 thriller produced Men of Respect - you are paying only what you fear, at the production scale was already 95 years old.
