History

Lima, the main center of the country in politics, industry, trade and finance, home to approximately 30 % of the population and contributes 60 % to the gross national product of the nation. The chaotic passenger is one of the main problems of the city. Apart from inconvenience to the population of the lack of suitable public transport means high economic losses for the country, such as lost working hours, pollution, excessive consumption of fossil fuels, as well as the costly deployment of scarce parking space for private vehicles.

Due to the seriousness of the situation was during the government of President Alan García (1985 - 1990) decided by decree law and the construction of a light rail. The construction of the line began in 1986, but the poor economic situation of the country allowed for many years little more than the maintenance of the already existing infrastructure.

Even after the transfer of the project on 30 May 2001 at the Municipality of Lima was limited further development. At the request of several neighborhoods and communities, however, the city administration introduced in the period from 11 July 2001 to September 2002, a free train operation. The offer was extended to all days of the week from October: Monday to Friday 7 to 14 clock; Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays 10-17 clock. Thus, it was possible to carry out maintenance and adjustment work on the system to simultaneously collect data for future demand, but also to prepare the passengers on the use of the new transport system. Since 18 January 2003, the city of Lima train is used commercially without interruptions. It operates daily 6-22 clock.

On 17 February 2005 the mayor of Lima Luis Castañeda Lossio and President Alejandro Toledo Manrique, signed a letter of intent with which the central government committed a loan of $ 120 million to guarantee the had requested the Municipality of Lima in the Spanish Government ( Credito FAD ) to extend the line 1 of the light rail and get off the Avenida Grau.

Technology

In the present single subway line Limas drive five six -car trains, two more are in reserve ready. A complete train is 107 meters long. All trains have been manufactured by Breda, driving on a track gauge of 1435 mm. Power is provided by overhead line at 1500 volts DC.

Further expansion

The complete project consists of three main lines, as well as other secondary routes ( DMTU routes). Currently, there are designs even with up to five lines.

  • Line 1: From the suburb El Salvador until their transition to line 2, in the district of Lima
  • Line 2 (East - West link ): From Ate to El Callao
  • COSAC Estapa 1: From Barranco to Comas ( through a bus network added)

The performed feasibility studies have shown that the project is feasible to concession contracts with private investors. With the revenues of the operation could be extended to Avenida Grau. In fact, the line would be 1 so self-supporting, and the concessionaire would it be possible to pay off his loans, once the route has been completed up to the holding station Hospital 2 de Mayo.
