Limburgs Symfonie Orkest

The Limburg Symphony Orchestra was a in Maastricht beheimatetes in the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra.

History

The orchestra was founded in 1883 as Maastricht Stedelijk Okest (MSO ). The first concert was held in the city park of Maastricht on 2 September 1883. In the 20s of the twentieth century began to give concerts outside of Maastricht. From 1949 to 1980, André Rieu sr. Chief conductor. During his leadership in 1955 from the urban MSO an independent foundation, the Limburg Symphony Orchestra. Commonly known since the orchestra was under the symbol LSO known, it is also because the violinist André Rieu played there for years.

The orchestra today

Was chief conductor since 2001 to 2012 Ed Spanjaard. About the orchestra included 80 musicians. Fixed venues are Maastricht ( Theater an het Vrijdhof ), Heerlen and Sittard.

The Vriendenvereniging ( Friends Association - Support Association ) was with nearly 4,000 members, the second largest in the whole of the Netherlands after the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam.
