Limoux

Limoux ( Occitan Limos ) is a commune with 10,155 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region; it is the administrative center for the district of Limoux Limoux and capital of the canton.

Limoux lies on the River Aude twenty kilometers south of Carcassonne.

History

Traces of human settlement there with the menhir " Pierre Droite " ( something like " upright stone " ) since the neolithic period. A primitive settlement was established on the hill of Flassian ( Flacianum ), another ( limosus ) on the banks of the Aude.

844 Charles the Bald was the location of the nearby Abbey of Saint- Hilaire. In the 10th century it belonged to the county Rases whose holders exercised the royal rights here, and later even became the capital of the vice- county of the same name. The development has been affected by the advent of the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade following. Afterwards the place came to Lambert de Turry, who now called himself Lambert de Limoux. In the 14th century Limoux went to the French crown.

Under Pope John XII. was the Diocese of Limoux Limoux built in 1317, but dissolved again in the following year. The only bishop was Durandus of St. Pourçain. Cathedral was the church of Saint -Martin.

Carnaval de Limoux

Every year in Limoux, the longest carnival in the world takes place, 2012 from mid-January until March 25, 2012. Carnival is celebrated on Saturdays and Sundays due to relocation of the different band. This pull, accompanied by musicians, in Pierrotkostümen through the city to the central square. The removals deal with local events such as politics, the local sports club or city known originals and are always held at 11 am, 16:30 and 21.30 clock. Taboos in the presentation, there are a few, but to the anonymity of the actors are preserved behind the masks and figures.
