The Limpopo River forms the northern border of South Africa to Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It is 1750 km long and includes a catchment area of ​​415,000 km ². The source of Limpopo is situated north of Johannesburg ( South Africa) in the Witwatersrand Mountains. The headwaters of the Limpopo is also known as Krokodilrivier which the water of the Maricoriviers draws at Oliphant's Drift and from there Limpopo means. It flows in Xai -Xai (Mozambique ) in the Indian Ocean. The mean annual runoff of the Limpopo is 7 330 million m³. Contributing rainfall from South Africa at 66 %, Zimbabwe 16 %, Mozambique 12 % and 6% of Botswana. The average annual rainfall in the catchment area of only 500 mm.
