Lincosamides

Lincosamides are a group of antibiotics. They can be called due to their chemical structure as Acylaminopyranoside; this means that they are of monosaccharides with a six-membered ring structure, the pyranoses derive. The lincosamides include clindamycin and lincomycin.

Lincosamides have a bacteriostatic effect, ie inhibit the growth of bacteria. By binding to the 50S subunit of the ribosome to cause an inhibition of the protein synthesis of the bacteria. Due to the similar mode of action as macrolides can cause cross-resistance.
