Linda Tillery

Linda Tillery ( born September 2, 1948 in San Francisco ) is an American singer-songwriter and music producer. She was instrumental in the renaissance of African-American song forms in the United States.

Life and work

Tillery received classical vocal training at age 19 and became a member of the soul band Loading Zone. First, under the pseudonym Sweat Linda Divine, she began a solo career in 1970, but also worked in the studios, where she eventually worked as a producer for Olivia Records. She appeared as a drummer and as a singer in the ensembles of Carlos Santana, Teresa Trull, Bobby McFerrin, Huey Lewis, June Millington, Linda Ronstadt, Barbara Higbie and Taj Mahal. Since 1991 she collects songs and materials of African American history. In 1993 she founded the purely female occupied Cultural Heritage Choir, which brought a repertoire of spirituals, Blue titles, work songs, children's songs from North America as well as South African and Afro-Brazilian songs a cappella world for performance. In addition, she plays with her band Skin Tight Blues and Jazz.

She has been recognized twice as an outstanding vocalist with the Bay Area Jazz Award.
