Linden-Museum

The Linden- Museum in Stuttgart on Hegelplatz is a state museum of Ethnography.

It is one of the largest ethnographic museums in Europe. In addition to special permanent exhibitions on the non-European ethnic groups are shown in the departments Africa, East Asia, South Asia, East Asia, South Pacific, North America, South America.

History

Business leaders from the region in 1882 the Württemberg Association of Trade Geography and promote German interests abroad eV with the aim of promoting geography, economy and culture. The name of the museum dates back to the chairman of the association, Count Karl von Linden (1838-1910), who did not live but the inauguration. In 1889 Linden transformed the that emerged from so-called trade Geographic Museum in the trade hall into a system based on scientific principles Ethnology Museum. Significant contributions to the construction of the collection was made by the last Württemberg King Wilhelm II

The still existing neoclassical building was designed by the prizewinner and architect Georg Eser together with the Stuttgart architects firm Bihl & Woltz in 1911, after approx. 18 months of construction, completed and opened on 28 May 1911. At this time the collections already included some 63,000 objects.

The state of Baden -Württemberg and the city of Stuttgart took over in 1973, public sponsorship for the Linden-Museum as a National Museum of Ethnology. Since then, the society of Earth and Ethnology Stuttgart strives eV as Friends of the Linden-Museum to the spread earth and ethnographic knowledge.

Museum

The Linden- Museum sees itself as a forum of cultures: Multifaceted support programs such as workshops, lectures, concerts, performances of dance and ceremony, movies, theme days, children's events and special tours complement the exhibition program.
