Line 3 (Madrid Metro)

Line 3 (Spanish Línea 3, short L-3) is a subway line of the Madrid Metro. It runs from Moncloa after Villaverde Alto, is 15.1 km long and has 18 stations. The average distance between stations is 888 meters. The route runs entirely underground. The L-3 belongs to the low-profile network of the metro and the length of the stations is 60 meters. At eight stations can be switched to other metro lines, at a station for local train Cercanías.

History

On 9 August 1936 a few weeks after the start of the Spanish Civil War, the first portion of the L -3 was opened between Sol and Embajadores. This stretch had been almost twenty years earlier planned as a branch line of the L-1, but the Metro company later decided for a separate line.

After the conquest of Madrid by Francisco Franco's troops in March 1939, Metro Society and the New Nationalist government wanted as soon as possible give the appearance of normality. So they pressed ahead with the construction of the extension to Argüelles, although this area was still completely in ruins. Finally, this section was opened on July 16, 1941.

A civic association in the south of Madrid expressed a desire to the L-3 to extend in the direction of Legazpi. Construction began in June 1946 and on March 26, 1949 was the first section Embajadores - be opened Delicias. To ensure that the Delicias station received a connection to the metro network ( this station was in operation until 1969 and was the terminus of trains from Portugal and Extremadura ). Legazpi was achieved on 2 March 1951.

The builders of the new campus of the Complutense University of Madrid had repeatedly called for an extension of the L- 3 via Argüelles addition, since the 1940s. However, the Metro company rejected this always depends on the grounds that it was to be expected ridership too low. After years of back and forth, finally, the section between Argüelles and Moncloa was put into operation on 22 July 1963. However, the Moncloa station provides access to the sprawling campus only insufficient and is located on its southern edge. All existing platforms were expanded from 60 to 90 meters in length in 2006. In addition, the line was extended on 21 April 2007 by the southern terminus Legazpi from 8.7 kilometers to Villaverde Alto.

Future

In the planning phase are two further extensions. From Moncloa from the line to the north perform on Islas Filipinas by Cuatro Caminos. For this purpose the Moncloa old station was replaced by a completely new building to bring the tunnel into the correct position. From the future southern terminus Villaverde Alto from the line to lead into the neighboring town of Getafe after Perales del Rio. In El Casar an interchange with L -12 ( MetroSur ) is provided.
