Line regiment

The regiments of the line set up at the beginning of the 20th century, the broad mass of the regiments of the standing army. There were all the regiments that - so the army had a guard - not part of the Guard.

The regiments of the line differed from Guards regiments, militia (military ), militia and irregular light troops. When the Light Infantry, which was previously organized in smaller organizations, such as the free battalions, became a part of the regular troops and militia, the National Guard were, etc. an integral part of warfare, the term regiment of the line was used for the delineation of these regiments to the ever active regular associations.

Regiments of the line, there was in the infantry ( line infantry), cavalry and artillery. They usually also formed the largest proportion of the number of troops. Today one speaks in this context of field and Territorial Army.
