Lingewaal

Lingewaal ( listen? / I ) is a municipality of the province of Gelderland.

The municipality was formed in 1986 from the communities Asperen, Heukelum, Herwijnen and Vuren and counted 11,006 inhabitants on 1 January 2013.

Location and economic

The community is located east of Gorinchem and Leerdam south of the Waal. The A15 motorway Dordrecht - Tiel runs north of the places in Lingewaal. Railroads do not exist in Lingewaal.

Main sources of income are agriculture and fruit growing.

History; Attractions

Asperen ( in the year 893 already mentioned in documents ) and Heukelum may call themselves cities, because both places were in the Middle Ages the town charter. Traces of which are still recognizable in the street plan and in the build up to today. Between 1816 and 1860 the New Dutch Waterline, a ring of forts around the fort was built in Holland. Two of them are located in the municipality Lingewaal: one in Vuren, one in Asperen. Both forts can be visited as part of a cycling or walking route. The impressive Fort Asperen also serves as an exhibition or performance space for artists. The community as a whole is suitable as a destination for lovers of typical Dutch farm villages. The bicycle is the most appropriate means of transport.
