Linguee
Linguee is a web service that an online dictionary for the languages : Bulgarian, Chinese, German, Danish, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish and Czech made available on the internet.
In contrast to comparable services such as LEO or dict.cc dictionary is at Linguee combined with a search engine that allows to access large amounts of bilingual, translated sentence pairs, most of which come from the World Wide Web. Since February 2014 are 234 different language combinations.
As a translator to Linguee therefore also differs from automatic translation services such as Babelfish and similar in function to a translation memory.
Technology
Linguee uses a specialized web crawler to search the Internet for appropriate bilingual texts and to be divided into parallel sets. The set of pairs found experienced an automatic quality evaluation by a trained man- machine learning algorithm estimates the quality of a translation. The user can access the set of sentence pairs using a fuzzy search, the ranking of search results by the previous quality evaluation and the match is affected with the search term. Users can also rate manually, so that the machine learning system is trained continuously translations.
Data sources
In addition to the bilingual Web are translated patent texts as well as the EU Parliament protocols and legislation of the European Union ( EUR -Lex ) as sources. According to the operator Linguee provides access to approximately 100 million translations.
History
The concept behind Linguee was conceived in the fall of 2007 by former Google employees Gereon Frahling and developed in the following year along with Leonard Fink. The business idea was awarded the 2008 Grand Prize of the business plan competition of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. In April 2009, the web service has been available to the public. Linguee is operated by Linguee GmbH, headquartered in Cologne.
