Liniers

Liniers is a district on the western outskirts of the Argentine capital, Buenos Aires. It has 44,000 inhabitants (as of 2001) on an area of 5.4 km ². The population density is 8,000 inhabitants well / km ² and thus significantly below the average of Buenos Aires, with about 13,500 inhabitants per km ².

Location and character

Liniers is bounded by the districts of Mataderos, Villa Luro and Versalles. It is a major transportation hub, which connects the west of Greater Buenos Aires with the City. The bus station there is the second most important city after Retiro.

Liniers is also an economic side Buenos Aires city center with numerous retail stores and street vendors. Among the more important buildings in Liniers include the " Estadio José Amalfitani " ( football stadium ) and the San Cayetano Church. The district is also home to the football club Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield.

Liniers was named after Santiago de Liniers, a Spanish soldier with French roots, which resisted the British invasion of the Río de la Plata.
