Link 22

Link 22 is a future NATO communication standard for data transmissions over data links between military units.

History

The development of Link 22 began in 1992 under the name of NATO Improved Link Eleven ( NILE ) with the aim to replace the current technology no longer used but still standard Link 11; it should be compatible with the link -16 networks. The participating NATO members are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Great Britain and the United States.

In December 2006, the Bundeswehr Technical Centre 61 began with tests for interoperability.

Technology

Link 22 transmits data in fixed- formatted 9 -byte datagrams, the format is compatible with the link of 16 How TDMA protocols with link 16 used for the channel access. Link 22 can transmit data over HF and UHF frequencies. UHF is for connections at close range (line of sight ) and RF links are provided for transfers up to 450 km.
