Link Layer Topology Discovery

Link Layer Topology Discovery ( LLTD ), ie link layer topology discovery, is a Microsoft Windows network protocol that is used to capture the topology of a network and present as well as to analyze the QoS (Quality of Service, QoS).

The protocol was developed by Microsoft as part of the Windows Rally technologies used in Windows Vista for the first time. For Windows XP, an update can be detected under Vista and Server 2008, Windows XP systems exist. As part of the Windows Rally Development Kit also a licensed source code version for Linux was released.

Under Vista and Server 2008, the computer and switches are shown in a topology graph. Network components are shown by small icons, and provided with the host name as recognition. The network connections between the devices are listed by lines. The icons can be explored further, so that a data pop-up appears, the important network data, such as MAC address and IP address (IPv4 and IPv6) specifies. The LLTD component for Windows XP, but (not IPv6) generate information only IPv4.
