Link-local Multicast Name Resolution

Link Local Multicast Name Resolution ( LLMNR ) is a protocol allowed based on the DNS packet format, the IPv4 and IPv6 hosts name resolution for hosts on the same local network. It is built into Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 7 and Windows 8

Protocol details

In order to respond to inquiries, listen receiver on UDP port 5355 in the following multicast address ranges:

  • IPv4 - 224.0.0.252, MAC address - 01- 00- 5E -00 -00- FC
  • IPv6 - FF02: 0:0:0:0:0:1:3 (or in short form FF02 :: 1:3 )

The receiver also listen on TCP port 5355 on the unicast address, which uses the host to respond.
