Lintel (architecture)

A fall in architecture to cover a wall opening that is formed either horizontally or with horizontal soffit. Depending on the wall opening is a door lintel or lintel. In the Gothic church architecture is called a Linteau.

Historical occurrences

In half-timbered wall openings are limited by bolt fall. In steel construction, it is called a fall also support. An arcuate fall also means fall bow or bow fall. Located in the historic massive stone relieving arches of brick were built partly falls, which should prevent the stone fall through loads and building settlement received pressure and broke.

A notable historical example to avoid the risk of breakage of the stone falls by a triangular stone relief above the lintel represents the Lion Gate of Mycenae

As a "false fall " is a horizontal lintel called, which is installed without a fall release.

In Austria, a fall is also referred to as a warehouse, in Switzerland often as fighters (see also: Fighter ).

Wortherleitung

In Duden " fall " with: " Empor Supremely - staring, related to mush ," explains. For the term " fall " is executed by Johann Christoph Adelung 1811: " The upper overhanging part of a thing is, in many cases the fall, as distinguished from the sole or threshold Thus, the upper surface of a window, door, they now usf sey horizontally. or curved, and the body forming this surface, the camber referred to as " (...). " Sometimes it is also the fall, or the top bar piece, the lintel called because for the former is called the sub-threshold. "

Variations

In the fall there are three different versions: the Tonsturz, the concrete lintel and the steel lintel. When working with sand-lime or cement stone, use a concrete lintel or steel lintel, work with parchment or light brick a Tonsturz.

  • The concrete lintel is available in widths of 12, 15, 18 and 20 cm and in lengths 1.03 1.29 1.55 1.81, 2.07 is 2.33 and 2.59 m.
  • A Tonsturz there are in the same widths as the concrete lintel and in uniform, increasing lengths 1:00, 1:20, 1:40, 1.60 m, etc.
  • Steel lintels are implemented via IPE beams

When masonry is wider than 20 cm, two drops are required.

Use

Thus, the wall holds over the recess, I implement a fall. The weight resting on it is distributed evenly over the simply supported ends on both parts of the wall. The fall is mostly used at recess lengths over 60 cm, smaller opening widths can be bridged by bed joint reinforcement of steel or by simply walls.
