Lionel Casson

Lionel Casson (* Lionel I. Cohen July 22, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York, † July 18, 2009 in New York) was an American classical scholar, particularly of the exploration of the ancient seafaring devoted himself.

Casson studied at New York University, where he 1939 Ph.D. received his doctorate and then worked as a lecturer, interrupted by war service in the U.S. Navy during World War II. From 1961 to 1979 he was Professor of Classical Studies ( Classics ) at New York University.

With a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1952 Casson explored the ancient seafaring and trading history and was one years traveling through the Mediterranean to study ancient port facilities. He summarized his research together in several fundamental monographs. In addition, he was also involved in ancient everyday and library history as well as ancient Egypt.
