Lionel Giles

Lionel Giles (* 1875, † 1958 ) was a British sinologist. He is the son of Herbert Giles.

He was curator of the Department of Oriental printed Books and Manuscripts at the British Museum.

Famous was his translation of the Sunzi Bingfa, he also translated the works of the Tao Te Ching, Liezi, Mengzi, Lun Yu, and many other texts from the Chinese.

Precious is his index to the Chinese encyclopaedia Ch'in -ting ku -chin t'u -shu chi -ch'eng ( Qinding Gujin Tushu Jicheng钦 定 古今 图书 集成).

He has also written a descriptive catalog of the held by the British Museum manuscripts from Dunhuang.
