Liperi

Liperi [ lipɛri ] is a municipality in eastern Finland with 12,404 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012). It is located in the countryside of North Karelia on the border with Savo approximately 20 km west of Joensuu.

The community is predominantly agricultural and is considered the " breadbasket of North Karelia ." The numerous lakes and nature Liperi make it a popular holiday destination. Altogether there are in the community 3000 summer houses. Liperi has benefited from its proximity to Joensuu, the largest city in the region. Unlike many other towns of North Karelia population growth is positive. The population is concentrated mainly on the three population centers Liperi, Viinijärvi and Ylämylly. The parish village of Liperi situated on a peninsula between the lakes Pyhäselkä, Ukonselkä and Heposelkä at the north end of Lake Saimaa. Ylämylly is located in the neighborhood of Joensuu at the north end of the Pyhäselkä Lake. The road from Joensuu to Kuopio leads to Ylämylly past as well as to Viinijärvi. Besides the three main varieties, the parish includes the villages Ahonkylä, Honkalampi, Jyri, Kaarnalampi, Kaatamo, Kompero, Käsämä, Leppälahti, Liperinsalo, Mattisenlahti - Puromäki, Puoliväli, Ruokalahti, Salokylä, Tutjunniemi and Vaivio - Härkinvaara.

The etymology of the name Liperi is not entirely clear. He probably comes from the Russian word for липа lipa ' lime tree '. The Lutheran church was founded in 1630 Liperi. Initially, it included also the municipalities Kuusjärvi ( Outokumpu ), Kontiolahti, Kaavi and Polvijärvi. The four ends of the red cross again in the arms of Liperi represent these communities as they broke away in the 19th century by Liperi.

Liperi maintains community partnerships with Orsa (Sweden), Saku (Estonia), Rendalen (Norway ), Büchenberg ( Germany ) and Sejlflod (Denmark).
