Lipstick Building

The Lipstick Building, the official name of 53rd at Third, is a 133 meter tall skyscraper in New York City borough of Manhattan that stands out in particular through its exceptional, reminiscent of a lipstick form. The building was completed in 1986 and is located in the 53th street, corner Third Avenue, directly adjacent to the Citigroup Center. The Lipstick Building was located on the 17th floor office of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities.

Architecture

The unusual shape of the building and design, oval, with a facade of glass and red granite, represents a contrast to the rectangular block-shaped neighboring buildings and also breaks through the traditional street grid. Although the decision for a more rounded design brought reductions in the total rentable office space with them, but this is compensated by the unusual and elegance of the building in the form of higher rents achievable again, since the building is a prestigious business address.

The postmodern art lobby extends over two floors and is nine feet high.

The architect Philip Johnson waived in this building in contrast to the other of his buildings of the 1980s, largely due to post-modern, historicist ornamentation. With the Lipstick Building, completed in its 80th year, Johnson decided stylistically to a new path.
