Lis Hartel

Lis Hartel ( born March 14, 1921 in Copenhagen, † February 12, 2009 ibid ) was a Danish dressage rider.

Life

She became ill in 1943 from polio and was unable to move the muscles in the lower leg after getting over the disease. Nevertheless, it was a successful dressage rider. She needed before and after each ride outside help because they the horse could not climb on their own. All the more surprising is their great successes in dressage. They each won at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki and 1956 in Stockholm on Jubilee the silver medal in dressage, both times behind the Sweden Henri Saint Cyr. The Swedish officer it was who she raised on the podium during the medal ceremony at the 1952 Olympics. In 1954 she was in Aachen World Champion in dressage.

Lis Hartel in 1992 was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Danish Sports.
