The area of the Baixa pombalina is a neighborhood of the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. It extends over 235 620 square meters in the center of town just north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district south of the Castelo de São Jorge.

The district is an elegant district, the construction of which was given immediately after the earthquake of 1755 in order. Was named the District of Marquês de Pombal, a Portuguese nobleman, who was Prime Minister from 1750 to 1777 in the country and played a crucial role in the reconstruction of Lisbon. The Marquis planned the city after the earthquake not by geography, but designed a strictly geometric road network.

The Pombaline is a good example of the early development of earthquake- safe construction. The capacity of the plant was tested by allowing marching troops of the military to architectural models to simulate a small earthquake.

The Portuguese government took the Pombaline on 7 December 2004 on the national list of suggestions for the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
