Lisht

El- Lisht is an ancient Egyptian necropolis approximately 60 kilometers south of Cairo.

History

The first king (Pharaoh) of the 12th dynasty, Amenemhet I, built for political reasons, a new capital, " Itji - taui " called. From here, the Nile Delta was easier to control, and perhaps he already has planned to cultivate the marshy area of the Faiyum.

Itji - taui has not yet been located to date accurate and is still being sought. Due to the existence of two pyramids, however, the associated necropolis in the modern el- Lisht is known and Itji - taui is not likely to have been located far from it.

The two regent Amenemhet I and Sesostris I, left their royal tombs at el- Lisht build. Here are also the grave sites of high incumbent under these rulers officials. The grave of the Treasurer Mentuhotep even had its own causeway. In the grave chamber was found to be well preserved ornate sarcophagus.

El- Lisht remained until the 13th dynasty into an important necropolis.
