848 the bishopric of Bremen was merged with the Archdiocese of Hamburg.

Pope Honorius III. 1224 confirmed the double diocese based in Bremen final. Hamburg has no more own bishop, the cathedral chapter of Hamburg, however, remains vested with special rights.

From 1540 the stands the Reformation led by against the will of the bishop. From 1566 Lutheran administrators were selected from Bremen Cathedral chapter.

1648 the archbishopric of Bremen was secularized and went as Duchy of Bremen to Sweden.
