Definition and Criteria

On the definition of the Alpine clubs Club Alpin Français, Deutsch, Italian Alpine Club and the Swiss Alpine Club involved. This summit were examined as an elevation with height difference to the surface on which they are located, according to three main criteria: topography, morphology and alpinism. For topography was calculated as the average value a Vertical separation of 30 meters, which was to be assumed as a limit. This value indicates how far you have to descend from the summit at least to get to a higher summit. For smaller surveys to classify their Vertical separation as borderline or too low, it is checked how its overall structure and appearance allow classification as a separate peak. As climbers association by the Commission of question summit also a test after mountaineering criteria, such as the importance of the collection for mountaineering or a significant history.

Were included in the list of all the peaks, whose saddle height is more than 30 meters. Likewise, some of the peaks were taken that were not there the topographic criterion.

  • The Mont Blanc de Courmayeur was taken despite the small Vertical separation because it is 600 meters as the crow flies from Mont Blanc and both morphologically and alpinistically seems important.
  • The same applies to the Grand Pilier d'Angle, which rises from the shoulder of Mont Blanc de Courmayeur.
  • Of the Aiguilles du Diable and Grandes Jorasses all the peaks were recorded over 4000 meters, because they play a major role in mountaineering and stand out morphologically clearly as spikes.
  • From the Breithorn all five peaks were included because their Vertical separation is sufficient and they are far enough apart to be considered independent.
