Situation in Germany

Support development

In 2006, more copies of computer magazines were first unsaleable remitted (ie by the merchants returned and subsequently destroyed in the normal case) than actually sold by the retail (source: IVW). Since 2001, the retail edition has thus fallen by over 2 million copies, representing a loss of 40%. During the same period, the proportion of unmarketable magazines could be reduced by as much as 12%.

Indicator development

A major source of revenue for the computer magazines are the advertising listings of retailers, manufacturers and service companies. Dealers advertise in increasingly price comparison sites as well as directly in the search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN. The manufacturers focus on interactive advertising such as webcasts and white papers integrations, their house exhibitions and other industry events.

The advertising industry is responding to this long-lasting negative trend and already booked for 2005 and 2006 magazines behave just yet. These effects are continued in 2007 as the Association of Magazine Publishers documented: "For the magazines, the advertising of 2007 began very cautiously. Compared to the previous year, the magazines reported in January 2007 at the ad pages fell by 4.5 percent. This is clear from the published Friday Panels Display Statistics ( ZAS ) of the Association of German Magazine Publishers VDZ. "

English-language computer magazines

Future of the market segment

The market segment is subject to both the sales market and the advertising market an ever increasing segmentation and has to deal with ever- rising printing costs, distribution costs and declining revenues. The increasing range of online services and the fact that a majority of workers use a computer for work in industrial countries which produce increasing pressure to change. This is also in the minds of editors.

The last chief editor before hiring PC Professionally gives its views in its relaunch blog:

"Everything is in a magazine a few weeks old. Layout, production, printing, delivery to the stand - it takes too long compared to the speed of the internet ... online and print are simply two different media, each with specific strengths and weaknesses. We want to focus with the new PC Professional on the strengths of print and offer the reader what online can not or does not do. "

At the VDZ - conference on the future of print media, the managing director of PC World, Mac World and several other publications expressed to the fact that IDG just had to stop a print publication in the U.S.: "I as an IT publishers do not have time. "His target group hike much faster into the net from the average for the population.
