List of counties in Nevada

The U.S. state of Nevada is divided into 16 counties. The capital of Carson City is an independent city, but is treated the same as a county by the U.S. Census Bureau.

On November 25, 1861 Nevada was first divided into first nine counties. On October 31, 1864 Nevada joined the United States, with then eleven counties. 1969 Ormsby County and the City of Carson City were merged and elevated to an independent city. Carson City is the capital of Nevada, but the largest and most famous city of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The FIPS code for Nevada is 32, the abbreviation NV.

Former counties

  • Bullfrog County, formed in 1987 from parts of Nye County, 1989, however, reversed, since the foundation was declared as unlawful.
  • Lake County ( Nevada), one of the original nine counties, was renamed in 1862 in Roop County and then went to 1864 parts to the Lassen County in California, the remaining part was incorporated in 1883 in Washoe County.
  • Ormsby County, one of the original nine counties. 1869 was merged with Carson City and is now the independent city with that name.
