List of countries by aluminium production

In the list of largest aluminum producer tables and graphs are presented with details about aluminum.

Overview

In the year 2009 was the largest producer country of aluminum by some distance the People's Republic of China ( 13 million tonnes), followed by Russia ( 3.3 million tons ) and Canada (3.0 million tons ), which together accounted for 52 3 percent of the world produced 36.9 million tons possessed. In Europe, Norway, Iceland and Germany were the main producers.

Due to the high power consumption in the production of aluminum numerous production facilities in recent years built up in countries with cheaper energy, for example in Venezuela, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates ( oil and gas), Brazil ( hydro), Australia and South Africa (coal) and Iceland ( hydro, geothermal ). In contrast, production facilities were in states with high electricity prices, for example in Germany, broken down.

The largest aluminum consumers are the USA, Japan, the People's Republic of China, Germany, Italy and France. The largest market for aluminum is the auto industry. Because of its light weight, aluminum is also indispensable in the aircraft industry, the packaging industry, mechanical engineering and structural engineering.

The production of aluminum is extremely energy intensive. About 40 percent of production costs are energy costs, and in most cases electrical energy is utilized. The aluminum smelter at Corus in Voerde for example, which annually produces 120,000 tonnes of aluminum with 500 employees, so much electricity as a town of 250,000 inhabitants.

The industry is suffering from the high electricity prices in Germany. High electricity costs are the main reason for the closure of the aluminum plants in Stade and Hamburg in 2005. Too, the Anglo-Dutch company Corus has threatened to close its aluminum smelter plants in Germany, if there are no competitive electricity prices could negotiate. Corus and the Trimet Aluminium AG have signed power purchase agreements with power plant operators E.ON and RWE to reduce their energy costs and become more competitive.
