List of countries by steel production

Here tables and graphs are presented to the global development of the steel industry.

Overview

In 2011, a total of 1514.7 million tonnes of steel worldwide, according to World Steel produced (2010: 1418.7 million tonnes). Compared to the previous year, the increase is 6.8 percent. The most important by far was the Country People's Republic of China with 683.3 million tonnes ( 2010: 626.7 million tonnes). The Chinese share of global production stood at 45.1 per cent. The country has increased its steel production over the previous year by 9.0 percent. The world production excluding China in 2011 was 831.4 million tonnes ( 2010: 792 million tonnes). She climbed over the previous year by 5.0 percent.

Other important producing countries in 2011 were

  • Japan 107.6 million tons,
  • The U.S. 86.2 million tons,
  • India 72.2 million tons and
  • Russia 68,700,000 tons.

Steel production in the 27 countries of the European Union in 2011 was 177.4 million tonnes ( 2010: 172.6 million tonnes). This represents an increase over the previous year by 2.8 percent. The German steel production in 2011 was 44.3 million tonnes ( 2010: 43.8 million tonnes). She climbed over the previous year by 1.1 percent. Other major producers in Europe were the Ukraine, Italy, France and Spain.

The world's largest steel company ArcelorMittal in 2010 was 98.2 million tons of annual production, followed by Baosteel 37.0 million tons and 35.4 million tons of POSCO. The largest exporter of steel in 2010 was Japan, at 42.7 million tonnes. The country with the highest imports was South Korea with 24.8 million tons.

Beginning of the 21st century, the demand for raw materials in the steel industry was temporarily not covered. This was due to a reentrant translated by a quarter century of stagnation exponential growth, by the sharp increases in steel demand in the Chinese economy, to a lesser extent the Indian, was mainly caused also. Between 2003 and 2007, steel production in China grew annually by more than the annual output of Germany. This trend was not seen before. Therefore, the supply of raw materials due to the limitations of the production capacity of the mines and the ship and cargo handling capacity in the maritime transport could not be increased fast enough despite global sufficient existing deposits of iron ore. Following a low steel prices in 2001, there was consequently twice during the year 2004 and the first half of 2008, approximately to doubling of prices for raw materials and steel products. By mid-2008 steel was scarce and expensive.

In the wake of the financial crisis, the demand for steel, took a short time off rapidly. In May 2009, as a result, world prices were compared to the peak in July 2008, more than half. Total 2009 worldwide 1232.3 million tons of steel were produced (2008: 1329.2 million tonnes). Compared to the previous year, the decline was 7.3 percent. The most important by far was the Country People's Republic of China with 573.6 million tonnes ( 2008: 500.3 million tonnes). The Chinese share of world production was 46.5 percent. The country has increased its steel production over the previous year by 14.7 percent. The world production excluding China in 2009 stood at 658.7 million tonnes ( 2008: 828.9 million tonnes). She sank down on the previous year by 20.5 percent. In 2010, world production had recovered.

Steel production

By country

All figures relate to the States in its present limits. For Russia, the production figures for the RSFSR are given, for example, until 1990.

By Region

With a different arrangement by region, the following picture.

For earlier years, steel production was distributed as follows:

World production

Per year

Listed is the global production of steel in millions of tons.

Per quarter

The development of the global steel production per quarter and per cent on the previous quarter and the previous year. The monthly and quarterly production figures from the World Steel Association based on data from 62 countries, the annual figures on data from 90 countries.

The three leading producing countries

By Company

The current rankings after merger of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation is available at http://www.worldsteel.org/statistics/top-producers.html.

The following table lists the name of the company and the country in which the headquarters are situated as well as the quantity produced are given in million tonnes in 2010.

Of 2006, the five largest steel companies, only 20% of global steel production here. Thus, the steel market in contrast to the consolidated aluminum market is still relatively fragmented.

Export and import

Listed are the largest exporters and importers of semi-finished and finished steel products in thousands of tons.

World Trade
