List of counts of Artois

In the list of the counts of Artois, the owner of the reign of the medieval French Feudalterritorium Artois are listed.

The historical province of Artois emerged from the ancient Roman pagus Atrebatensis, named after the Belgian tribe of the Atrebates, which belonged to the West Frankish kingdom since the Frankish kingdom division of Verdun in 843. In the early 10th century, Artois was fought between the powerful Counts of Flanders and Vermandois, although Flanders 932 could settle permanently in the region itself.

On the occasion of her marriage to King Philip II Augustus in 1180 Isabella of Hainault was the Artois by her uncle, Count Philip I of Flanders, given as a dowry. After Isabella's death in 1190 her heritage went over the Lions on their son, the crown prince under age Louis VIII. His father came to the Count of Flanders in long disputes over the ownership rights to the Artois, in the Treaty of Peronne (1200) the king of the north of Artois eventually ceded to Flanders. Prince Ludwig, however, forced in 1212 by Countess Johanna the publication of the area affected, but only after the Battle of Bouvines in 1214 he was able to secure his mother's heritage definitively for itself.

With the accession of Louis VIII in 1223 Artois was annexed to the royal domain. But in his will from 1226 decreed Louis VIII the investiture of his younger son Robert with the Artois, which took place in 1237.
