List of craters on Mercury

The list of Mercury crater includes only the previously officially named impact craters on Mercury. The craters on Mercury are named after deceased artists, musicians, painters and writers, accomplished the outstanding or fundamental achievements in their field and are recognized as art historically significant for more than 50 years. The only exceptions to this are the two crater Kuiper and Hun Kal Gerard Peter Kuiper played a leading role in the preparation and organization of the Mariner program. Shortly after his death in 1973 sent the Mariner 10 probe, the first high-resolution images of the surface of Mercury to Earth. Only through these images were 1976, the first topographical Mercury objects are determined and named. And the smallest crater named Hun Kal Mercury defines the 20 West Longitude and is therefore the basis of planetographic coordinate grid of Mercury.

Official names of structures on celestial bodies shall be assigned by the International Astronomical Union ( IAU). Managed the lists by the U.S. Geological Survey ( USGS) in the Gazetteer of Planetary Nomenclature (see links). They are updated online.

Probably the biggest impact caused by a topographic object on Mercury is the Caloris Basin, this will be counted, though due to its very flat and level structure of the IAU to Planitiae and not to the craters.
