List of Crusader castles
As a crusader castle castles are called, have been associated with the Crusades built or occupied the Holy Land from the Crusaders.
Characteristic of Crusader castles is the so -called " Crusader architecture", a mixture of European, Byzantine, Armenian and Arabic style. These castles experienced nearly all a checkered history of sieges, conquests and re-conquests, often within a few years or decades. Permanent reconstruction by each other rulers led to a mixture of architectural styles. The castles which are referred to as Crusader castles, are mostly located in present-day Syria, on the Asia Minor and the Levant Mediterranean coast or in the hinterlands.
Castles in the Holy Land have also influenced the architectural style in Europe, are examples of the Edwardian castles in Wales, such as Caerleon or Harlech, and Château- Gaillard in France.
