The Commissioner of Internal Affairs is a member of the European Commission. The resort has been newly created office of the Barroso II Commission on February 10, 2010. Previously there had been since 1995 the Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security, whose term of office has now been split into an internal policy and a justice department.

First incumbent of the interior ministries is the Swede Cecilia Malmström ( FL / ELDR).
