List of fountains in Bern

The city of Bern is known for its fountains. Best known are the fountains with statues from the 16th century in the old town, which originate mainly from the workshop of the sculptor Hans Freiburg Gieng:

History

In the 13th century there were in the city of Bern different source wells and probably cisterns and private Sodbrunnen. Just Ingers City Chronicle mentioned that you could get at the end of the 14th century already at five flowing water fountain in Bern. Of these, only five wells of Stettbrunnen is obtained ( since 1855 with stone basins ).

When the then well, it was only to wooden floor fountain. Only in 1520 the first stone fountain was erected at the cross street. Between 1542 and 1546 then were a variety of still present Wood Fountain with stone floor fountain with the typical Bern fountain figures, which come largely from Freiburg sculptor Hans Gieng replaced. In the 19th century, the wells were considered to be obstructions to traffic and many of them were moved and renovated in the 1840s in the spirit of the time little professionally and using unsuitable materials such as lead and cement and transformed.

On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the city of Bern, the time for the most part neglected wells have been carefully renovated in 1890/91. In 1896 the master shoemaker Heinrich Philipp extinguishing bequeathed his fortune to the city of Bern for the maintenance of the fountain, which is another total renovation allowed in 1925.

While the fountain figures and columns were previously painted discreetly in renovations, now are bright colors that resist the effects of the weather longer used.
