List of glaciers of Iceland

Iceland's glaciers cover large parts of the island, a total of about eleven percent of the land surface. Therefore characterize the Islands landscape significantly. The word Jökull means in Icelandic glacier and is therefore to be found in the name of almost every glacier.

Interaction between glaciers and volcanoes

Under virtually all glaciers Islands are volcanoes. The best-known and most active of these volcanoes are located under the largest glacier, Vatnajökull. Under him, among others, are the Grímsvötn volcanoes and Bárðarbunga. The caldera of Grímsvötn comprises approximately 100 km ² of Bárðarbungu still around 60 square kilometers.

The übergletscherten volcanoes have triggered numerous glacial streams, tidal waves, which arise as a result of volcanic eruptions at Gletscherabschmelzung and partially reached devastating proportions. It also follows from the ice sheet over the volcanoes, the tendency to phreatomagmatic eruptions ..

The global warming of recent years is also the Icelandic glaciers are melting pretty fast, so geologists fear that the volcanic activity could increase to Iceland in the coming years. Lt.. the geologist Erik Sturkell have lost the Icelandic glaciers since 1890 to 2011 more than 300 cubic kilometers of ice.

Sea and glaciers

Due to the subarctic climate some glaciers calve almost at sea level, this is true of the Breiðamerkurjökull which feeds the famous glacial lake Jökulsárlón and the nearby Breiðárlón.
