Tesuji (Japanese手筋) is a Japanese term that refers to strategic board games such as Go or Shogi a fundamental sequence of moves that locally works particularly well and brings a certain sophistication. Which headways actually be considered as Tesuji, but is not clearly stated as a clear demarcation to ever more complex and more specific move sequences is not possible to go.

One of the simplest Tesuji in Go is the staircase or ladder ( shicho ), which usually already acquainted beginners in their first games. Here, a group of stones is always kept in "Atari " until they can finally be beaten. On the board there is but the image of a ladder or staircase.

One of the fundamental Tesuji in Shogi is the hanging Bauer ( tarefu ), where a farmer is used with the goal on the field to attack the next train out of the field before this farmer.

A Tesuji that is not played correctly, called Hamete.
