List of Greek phrases

This list is a collection of old and modern Greek phrases, proverbs and sayings. It describes their use and are, where possible, the resources.

Graeca non leguntur

This stereotypical Note ( "Greek is not read. " - " Ελληνικά δεν διαβάζονται " ) went over medieval commentators of the Corpus iuris Civilis, who were no longer master of Greek, all Greek passages for which there was no Latin translation.

In ancient times, however, the Greek Koine was a world language, which was maintained even in the Byzantine Empire. That was like in the days of Cicero, who complained in the speech for Archias:

Criteria

Included in this list are words and phrases that either

  • Importance for philosophy have (eg Panta Rhei. → Πάντα ῥεῖ. )
  • Of literary significance (eg, the beginning of the Iliad. " Sing the wrath, O goddess, the Peleiaden Achilles ' → Μῆνιν ἄειδε θεὰ Πηληιάδεω Ἀχιλῆος )
  • Of historical importance (eg Byzantine Empire → Βασιλεία τῶν Ρωμαίων )
  • Are needed in the church ( eg Kyrie eleison -. Kύριε ἐλέησον. )
  • Or role models for German or Latin Proverbs were (eg, " In vino veritas. " " In wine there is truth lies. " → Ἐν οἴνῳ ἀλήθεια. )

Another selection criterion is Georg Büchmanns Zitatensammlung Winged words, was being waived to take account of personal names as Nestor ( doyen of science ) or mentor ( counselor of younger ), as it were, looked Büchmann as winged name.

Erasmus of Rotterdam, influential in the age of humanism, quotes collection comprises 4,251 Adagia wisdom, much of which is, however, in Latin. Even in this well-known work are not the admission criteria clearly, so Erasmus winged words, proverbs and literary quotations has described.

Since many phrases are often better known in its Latin version, many of them also appear in the list of Latin phrases.
