List of heads of state of Libya

This list of heads of state of Libya from 1951 to today, including the king of Libya, the Chairman of the Command Council and Secretaries-General of the General People's Congress.

Although Muammar Gaddafi stepped down in March 1979 by all state offices, he was a revolutionary leader of the de facto rulers of the country, its influence in the wake of the civil war shrank.

From February 2011 ruled until October 23, 2011 in Libya civil war between the Gaddafi regime and the rebels with the National Transitional Council established by them as a separate government body. The National Transitional Council has taken on the full power of government on 23 October 2011 after the official declaration of liberation of the country. The Chairman Mustafa Abd al - Jalil has since de facto ( in practice ) head of state, de jure, but only representative of the sovereign (like in Switzerland, the Federal President or the Prime Minister of Japan ).

On August 8, 2012, the governmental power was handed over to the General Assembly, which had been determined in the elections on 7 July 2012 from the Libyan people. The function of head of state so went over to the president of that body.
