List of knots

The attempt to create a complete and unambiguous list of nodes encounters difficulties: The nodes were not systematically defined from a central location, but have grown historically over centuries and across different regions, and presumably some were invented several times independently. They are also used in very different environments ( Schiffer, hunters, anglers, climbers, etc.), each developed its own terminology, between which but often no contact. This means that the same node depending on the environment can contribute a totally different name. Conversely, however, can vary depending on ambient denote a completely different nodes and the same name.

As an illustrative example of the fisherman's knot can be cited: In the nautical fisherman's knot refers to a tightening loop are attached to the objects on a rope. In the fire service, however, fisherman's knot refers to a node to which are connected two cables. These two nodes are indeed related, but the relationship is revealed only by very close examination, in practice, there are actually two completely different nodes. The fire brigade variant is called by anglers but fishing knots. Austrian cavers again speak of the cave nodes when they attach a carabiner on the rope by means of ( nautical ) a double fisherman's knot. Starting from the fire brigade variant they call these nodes also half a double fisherman's knot. See also node name.

Also, the node - standard work by Clifford Ashley is not free of such inconsistencies. Ashley takes this position in the preface.

Introduction

The table below the sortable list of nodes contains the most important and common node (column " base node " ) and their common names in different organizations ( "Name" column ).

Depending on the application, different nodes are particularly suitable. Sailors, climbers, rescuers and fishermen use for their own purposes (column " type " and "use" ) best node and also give them their own names. In the sortable table, the nodes are arranged alphabetically. The same node (column " base node " ) with different names are listed more than once, the most important designation is awarded in bold. Many nodes are described in detail in separate articles. Node, engraving and Stek mean the same thing; in this respect the different node names they are listed only once (example Schotstek: not as pods pods stitch or knot, but as Weber nodes). The nodes listed in the Big Book of the nodes of Ashley are marked with the corresponding number.

Node types

We distinguish between the following node types:

The assignment of node name to the main user groups are in the rear slots (same nodes are referred to variously by different users ):

In the article knot strength nodes are compared with the same use on their strength. For example, the loops of the figure eight knot has proven itself and is therefore used worldwide in climbing and rescue services.
