Statistics

Since the founding of the modern Swiss federal state in 1848, a total of 115 federal councilors 1141 years ( (2011 - 1848) * 7 ) were long in office. So average was a Federal around ten years ( exactly 1141 years in office, 115 Federal Councillors = 9922 years ) in office. This leads to a great continuity of government and contributes to the very high by international stability of the political system in Switzerland. (Balance after 161 years the Federal Council on 16 November 2009 ), the Federal Council, however, since the year 2012, the most recent official since the election of Hans Schaffner in 1961 and thus one of the youngest in the official story.

Normally, federal councils will be replaced if they resign. Failure to re-election is extremely uncommon. In the history of the Swiss Confederation, this is only happened four times, with 1873-2002 a member of the Federal Council was not re-elected.

Federal Councillors who did not accept the election

So far, took five elected federal councils the choice not to. The last time leaned Francis Matthey first time in over 100 years in 1993 from his choice. Instead, Ruth Dreifuss was elected as the first representative of the Federal SP. Louis Ruchonnet, the choice of 1875 still refused a second time was in 1881 elected to the Federal Council and participated in the election. The selected instead of Ruchonnet Charles Estoppey rejected the election as well. Finally, it was chosen as the previously youngest Federal Numa Droz.
