List of National Memorials of the United States

National Memorial is in the United States the name of a monument that commemorates a historical person or a historical event. National Memorial are approved by the United States Congress. The monuments are often at sites that have nothing to do with the events or persons. Many of them, such as the USS Arizona Memorial also do not bear the name " National " in their name.

Most National Memorials are owned by the National Park Service and are managed by him. Some monuments are managed by other organizations, but these are regarded as connected areas. The owners of these connected areas are supported by the National Park Service in the preservation of monuments.

As with all historic areas in the National Park System, National Memorial will be automatically added to the National Register of Historic Places, only some of the connected areas are not listed in the register.

Occasionally, private organizations build a monument and lead the word " National " in its name on without letting approve it by Congress. This is apparently not illegal as long as they do not give the impression of a government department. Even if these make it appear to be a national monument, they are not " National Memorial ", in the sense that they have the recognition of the American people, represented by the government. An example of this is the George Washington National Masonic Memorial.

Other National Memorial are the Oklahoma City National Memorial, commemorating the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City on 19 April 1995 and the World Trade Center Memorial in New York City.
