Poisonous plants

Poisoning can occur by the fact that the plant material is passed through the mouth into the digestive tract. Some plants can cause skin irritations even when touched. Poisoning by contact with plant sap can be expected only in a few plants (such as the monkshood ) and express themselves about by a local numbness. There are a few plants in which already the skin contact may cause severe poisoning. Examples include the Ongaonga (English: Tree Nettle, Urtica ferox ) and poison ivy (English: Poison Ivy, Toxicodendron radicans ).

Some poisonous plant parts (eg, boiling ) are also edible after suitable treatment. So green beans for example, are very toxic in raw form, when cooked but digestible. Also elder is slightly toxic in raw form and leads to indigestion. Many poisonous plants are - correctly dosed - despite, or even because of the toxic agent medicinal plants.

The plants of poisonous ornamental plants poses a health risk. In particular, outdoor facilities, where children play, be as free of poisonous plants. But dealing appropriately with plants as an educational goal is an important safety factor.

Furthermore, it should be noted that the reaction of the organism can always depend on the amount of the toxic substance, the constitution of the individual and partly on the genetic predisposition. The details of the toxicity, as are common in the literature, are rough classifications above average poison content according to past experience and severity of the poisoning cases occurring (in terms of typical taken to be dose). Also known as low toxic classified plants can cause severe poisoning in individual cases.

Mushrooms are not plants, but form an independent kingdom. For poisonous mushrooms see list of poisonous mushrooms.
