Prime Minister of the Basque Country

The first Basque government was set up in 1936 during the Second Spanish Republic as a Gobierno de Euskadi. But soon, during the Spanish Civil War, the Basque country lost the autonomy, and the Basque Government was during the Franco dictatorship only in political exile.

After the death of Franco in transition to democracy, a transitional organ was first created in 1978, the Consejo General Vasco, whose presidents are officially not recognized as Lehendaraki. Only since 1980 with the adoption of the Statute of Autonomy is today's Basque Government as the successor of the former Gobierno de Euskadi.
