List of Prime Ministers of Canada

The list of Prime Minister of Canada lists all the Prime Minister (English prime minister, premier ministre double ) of Canada. Canada has a bicameral Parliament with a system based on the Westminster parliamentary government. Here, the prime minister is also the chairman of the party that holds the most seats in the lower house ( in Canada, the majority voting applies ). The Prime Minister acts as head of government, while the Head of State, the Canadian monarch, is represented by the Governor-General.

Only two Prime Minister - John Abbott and Mackenzie Bowell - belonged prior to their appointment as Prime Minister to the House not to as it would correspond to the common law. Both were members of the Senate and took over in 1891 and 1894 respectively after the death of the predecessor government.

Acting Prime Minister is Stephen Harper of the Conservative Party, which has held since February 6, 2006 a minority government.
