List of Royal Navy shore establishments

This list contains all of the permanent bases of the British Navy (January 2006).

Identification and naming

In addition to the place name most bases carry an additional name in the style of a warship, beginning with the abbreviation HMS for Her Majety 's Ship. This name is always in a historic or symbolic connection with the base. In addition, the nature of the base, with the exception of training facilities of the Royal Navy, indicated by the following abbreviations:

  • HMNB = Her / His Majesty's Naval Base ( naval base )
  • = RNAS Royal Naval Air Station ( Aerodrome )
  • RMB = Royal Marine Base ( base of the Royal Marines)
  • CTCRM = Commando Training Centre Royal Marines ( training establishment of the Royal Marines)

In the course of restructuring and cooperation with the other military branches on individual bases of this scheme is, however, not consistently applied since the late 1980s.
