List of rulers of Welayta

The Kingdom Wolaytta (also Welayta, Walayta ) was a kingdom in 1250 founded in the south of present-day Ethiopia. In 1896 the UK was dissolved and incorporated into Ethiopia, until 1974, the area had still their autonomy within Ethiopia.

The titular of the kingdom was the ethnic group of Wolaytta, the official language of the kingdom was the same Wolaytta.

The Kingdom Wolaytta could look back on a long and rich history. After surviving tradition, the Kingdom Wolaytta end of the 13th century were already in contact with Christianity, introduced by the intermediary of St. Tekle Haymanot.

The kingdom was conquered, however, through the greater and expansion joyous kingdom of Abyssinia by Emperor Menelik II and incorporated south of the former kingdom of Shewa in the region in the early 1980s. The conquest is described as one of the bloodiest campaigns of the entire period of expansion of Ethiopia. The traditions of the Wolaytta after a total of 118,000 soldiers of the kingdom Wolaytta and 90,000 soldiers of Shewa were killed in the fighting. Kawo (king) Tona, the last king of Wolaytta, was defeated, conquered the Kingdom in 1896 and eventually incorporated into the Ethiopian Empire.

Nevertheless, the Wolaytta area had a kind of autonomous status and was until the fall of the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974 by governors who were directly attributable to the former Wolaytta King accountable governed. After 1974, the Derg military regime restructured the administrative divisions of Ethiopia and ordered the former Kingdom of Wolaytta as part of the province of Sidamo.
