List of strong chess tournaments

The first historical international masters tournament is known from 1575. In Madrid Giovanni Leonardo da Cutri won ahead of his compatriot Paolo Boi Sicilian and the author of a famous chess book, Ruy López de Segura Spain. This was, however, a singular event. Renowned chess tournaments were aligned again until the 19th century.

The first international chess tournament in the modern era took place in 1851 on the edge of the Great Exhibition in London. In Germany the first chess tournament on 7 and 8 September 1862, carried out in Dusseldorf. Of the eight participants Max Lange took first place in front of Otto Wülfing.
